This past weekend I wrote the short flash story The Noises on the Other Side for the weekly Flash Mob Writes writing competition. You can read the story here if you haven’t already. The goal of the friendly competition is to write a 300-500 word story base on one of the two prompts that they provide. I rewrote the story about six or seven times from different angles, using different characters, trying different ideas. Then I thought about this one change in the characters. The stories about two sisters huddled in the corner of their bedroom. Then they hear noises.
“My eyes were racing as I read this, hurrying to discover what the hell was going on, fearful for the sisters and THEN … wow. I was so worried I never saw the twist coming!” – Ruth
“As I read this one, I grew eager to see this story flip the idea of ghosts in the attic (or spare bedroom) on its head. You didn’t disappoint, as the POV revealed we watched this play out through the eyes of ghostly sisters Colleen and Maggie. Maggie’s line of, “But they’ll come back. They always come back.” peered right into how a ghost story might seem to the ghost.” -Cara
