“Wear this green jewel around your neck and you can be any man that you want to be. It’ll bring you luck and so much more. Try it on,” the merchant said.

I grabbed the green jewel and raised it to up; I hesitated before lowering it around my neck.

I looked down at my shoes, they squeaked when I walked, the soles were ripping apart. My jeans had a hole in the knee. I wore two coats, the outer coat had a broken zipper forcing me to wear a hoodie beneath it. My shirt was one size too big.

He saw my reluctance.

“Wear it. You will become a better man. Your image and self worth will rise. Trust me.”

Behind me, my children waited; the oldest smiled; the other was becoming impatient to continue on.

“I’m already the man I want to be.”

I returned the jewel. He tried to convince me to buy it but I turned and grabbed the hands of my children, they are what make me a better man.
