The air was cool with a damp smell lifting off of the Mississippi. A small crowd gathered around a street musician who performed his rendition of Louis Armstrong’s ‘What a Wonderful World’.
Slowly, the crowd began to look away and towards the sky; there was a rumble coming – distant and faint; then, you could feel the vibrations as a fighter jet thundered overhead.
‘Was that one of ours?’ A man inquired to another.
But before the stranger could answer no, another fighter jet soared by – it was lower, it looked different. Everyone cowered covering their ears, shielding the children.
A plume of smoke erupted from the bottom of the second jet, there was a flash of fire, then a missile launched out from beneath it. I stared on in disbelief as a missile connected with the first jet, the explosion of pieces sprayed over the downtown streets.
The tornado alarms sounded. The crowd scattered in panic. I looked back at the musician, he continued to sing, ‘and I think to myself what a wonderful world.’

Chilling – I loved the juxtaposition of the song with the chaos that was unfolding. I wonder where the fighter jets were from?

Such a chilling scene! What makes it even more chilling is that the street musician is playing, “What a Wonderful World!” I could feel the panic of the people on the streets! Great story, E.F.!
